Colombian coffee exports witness 38% decline

Published 19 September 2011

Colombia’s National Federation of Coffee Growers in Bogota has revealed in its recent statement that the country’s exports in August have dropped 38% to 374,000 bags, compared to 599,000 bags in August 2010.

Storms last year have damaged the crop, and contributed to the reduced production last month, reported Bloomberg.

The figure is said to be the lowest since the country exported 347,000 bags in September 1988. Also, Columbia's coffee output reduced to 466,000 bags from 615,000 bags in the previous year, the lowest monthly level since August 2009, the federation said.

Lower coffee exports from Colombia have led to a 39% rally of coffee in New York in the past 12 months.
